چکیده
This paper describes a variable-grain power gating and suspend-free voltage scaling scheme based on the self-timed pipeline (STP) circuits. The STP operates with its local hand-shake signal so that it does not require the global clock distribution, i.e., centralized control. Therefore, various power supply control for the STP can be naturally localized in both spatial and temporal domains without stopping its effective data transfer, e.g., program execution in case of microprocessors. As a result, the power supply scheme proposed in this paper can efficiently incorporate both commonly used voltage scaling (VS) and power gating (PG) techniques and it can further produce synergetic effects on its total amount of power saving. This paper reports evaluation results of the proposed scheme through actual power measurement of our fabricated STP-based data-

This paper describes an experimental chip of self-timed (clockless) power-aware pipeline incorporating stage-by-stage power gating scheme. Its power gating circuit cuts the voltage-supply to the idle pipeline stages in order to reduce the static (leakage) power dissipation. To reduce the dynamic power dissipation, self-timed pipeline (STP) is one of the suitable circuit architectures because it...

We propose an elastic pipeline that can apply dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) to hardwired logic circuits. In order to demonstrate its feasibility, a hardwired H.264/AVC HDTV decoder is designed as a real-time application. An entropy decoding process is divided into context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) and syntax element decoding (SED), which has advantages of smoothing workloa...

The management of power consumption for battery life is widely considered to be the limiting factor in supporting the concurrent operation of high performance, complex applications on mobile platforms. At 65nm and below, minimizing the static power dissipation through aggressive techniques such as coarse grain MTCMOS power gating and threshold voltage scaling can yield these significant reducti...
